Character Name: Laura Moon
Series: American Gods (Starz)
Age: 27
From When?: Season 3; Episode 10: During her final conversation with Shadow. Though Shadow Moon releases her on the show, for purposes of the game, he will kill her with Czernobog's sledgehammer as vengeance for killing Wednesday.
Inmate Justification: Despite there being some progress during her visit to Purgatory, Laura is still a pint-size asshole who's searching for the meaning of everything. She is barbed, selfish, manipulative, and angry as fuck. Also completely unrepentant for her misdeeds during her living and dead years. She's killed things and a God and generally is not a very nice person.
Arrival: Against her will.
Abilities/Powers: No supernatural powers or extraordinary abilities.
Inmate Information:
Laura Moon née McCabe grew up as a pretty normal kid. She enjoyed what other children liked. She believed in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and magic. She had friends and hobbies, went swimming, and watched cartoons. Her parents were religious and she knew the bible and some of its verses by heart.
When her parents’ marriage began to suffer, Laura joined her father on “trips” where she became an icebreaker for him to start chatting up pretty ladies. It became a trend and in her own words, her father ended up sleeping with every woman in sight. In turn, her mother had revenge sex with every man in sight and when they finally divorced, Laura felt at fault. As soon as she came of age, she followed in their footsteps and fucked every broken boy she could find. In her words, if they weren't broken already, they would be by the time she was done with them.
Since then, her views on the world have shifted to be anything but positive and the ripple effect only takes her further into a darker place where anger and apathy manifested into depression. Anything and everything she cared about or saw as good was found to be a lie and not real, leaving her to grow more and more miserable until eventually, Laura began having suicidal thoughts.
Things changed when she met Shadow Moon. He made life a little less dismal and boring and soon enough, they fell in love. After they married, her depression with day-to-day life returned. So, in an effort to save the marriage, she suggested they rob the casino she’d worked at for years. She came up with a solid plan that she was sure he wouldn’t get caught. But he did.
Despite the way it might have looked, it wasn’t a set-up. In fact, Laura wanted to be held accountable for her part in the whole thing. Shadow, however, refused to let her spend any time in jail and agrees to take the fall as long as she’ll wait for him on the outside. Sure, it was easy enough to promise at first, though after a year and a half, Laura finds herself sexually involved with her best friend's husband, Robbie.
Days before Shadow is to be released from prison, Laura explains to Robbie while on a drive that their affair is over and gives him one final blowjob before both die in a fatal accident.
So, when Laura finds herself alive again because of some asshole leprechaun with a lucky coin that ended up in her widowed husband's possession and then on her grave, she knows the impossible had become possible and she somehow became a walking talking cadaver with superhuman strength. Her death made her realize that all she wanted was what she had, but with her body continuing to decompose and Shadow knowing the full circumstances behind the car accident that claimed her life, he wasn’t ready to resume married life as normal. Still, she vows to keep an eye on him and ends up meeting the original owner of said gold coin that brought her back to life – Mad Sweeney, the asshole leprechaun. A cab is broken into, Salim, the driver pulls a gun on them, and all three head off on a road trip together to visit a loa about a proper resurrection.
While the shitshow continues, Laura learns things that only keep her hating everything and everyone. It comes to light that Sweeney is responsible for crashing the car that took her and Robbie’s life and that he’d been hired by Shadow’s father who incidentally was the Norse God, Odin, who wanted her out of the way to get to him. She’s livid, but not surprised because that’s what seems to always happen to her. Yet, she still comes to realize that she has developed some kind of feelings for Sweeney. Even if she was reluctant to even admit that to herself.
It’s only when she learns Shadow kills him that she acts more compassionately and takes care of his body until deciding to return his coin to him with hopes it would bring him back to life and end her own. It doesn’t work, but it sends her to Purgatory where she’s faced with taking the necessary steps of facing what happened in her childhood and confronting the guilt she felt over the divorce of her parents being all her fault.
Path to Redemption:
For almost as long as Laura has been living, belief in anything has been lost on her. She told Liam before killing Wednesday that when she was little, she used to pray to God to make her special but realized that fate and destiny and love and everything in between weren’t real. She wants to be something to someone; to love and be loved and to find reasons to live a purposeful life where things might go right for a change. She needs a sense of fulfillment. All she knows is negative emotions.
Laura’s progress on the show managed to feed more into her pessimistic views. She’ll see the Barge as another “Purgatory”, so anyone stepping in to be her Warden is going to need a level of patience that can handle constant pushback and strong resistance to believe anything that she’s rarely, if ever, experienced. No one can tell her something exists. She needs to see it (or feel it) to believe it. And even then it has to happen more than a few times to get her to even accept it.
I can’t honestly say graduation for her will be happening anytime in the near future. But when it does happen, she’ll be exactly who that little girl was meant to be if she didn’t grow up believing she was the architect of every bad thing that happened in her life.
History: Season One | Season Two
Season 3
Months after Shadow kills Mad Sweeney, Laura returns to New Orleans to see if Baron Samedi had been able to bring him back to life. Maman Brigitte explains bringing back a God wasn't easy and that he tried his best but didn't succeed.
Laura takes him to a crypt in a nearby cemetery with the intention of bringing him back to life by giving him his lucky coin back and knowing that she would die for real. She writes on his forehead what he needs to do and retrieves the coin, which falls out of his hand right as she turns to a pile of ash.
She ends up in Purgatory where she's forced to confront her entire life and learns that nothing was her fault when it came to her parents divorcing. Back at the crypt, a family arrives to visit and departed family member but finds Sweeney's body on their tomb in a pool of fresh blood (his). A caretaker is called to clean up the mess.
Finally returning to earth, Laura is alive again. It seemed the potion she held onto from Samedi that was missing the two drops of blood infused with love broke and mixed with the Sweeney's. Realizing what this meant, she waits around for the caretaker to cremate Sweeney's remains and returns to Ibis and Jacquel's Funeral Parlor and to the spot where Shadow stabbed and killed the leprechaun with Gungnir, which he magics away to his hoard.
Salim finds her and asks if it was his blood that brought her back. Laura confirms and presents the box of Sweeney's ashes when Salim asks if he is alive, too. They discuss love and death and Laura announces she's going to kill Wednesday. She asks Ibis where to find the god and he sends her and Salim to a place where someone might be able to answer that more definitively. Along the way, Laura and Salim discuss religion.
The "someone" Ibis suggests turns out to be Shadow. She tells him the whole story with Wednesday's involvement and asks him to help her find him. He implores her to move on and declines to reveal where he is. She asks why and he tells her Wednesday is his father. Laura tells him that it doesn't change anything and he has to go. They say goodbye and she leaves.
Back at the hotel, Salim waits for Laura. They discuss the plan going forward and head across the country to track Wednesday. They run into Mr. World who says that they have a common enemy.
During a meeting with the New Gods, Mr. World suggests taking his help. Salim asks why they don't kill him given their resources. He explains they don't want to start a war and that if Laura does it then would be considered a personal matter. Laura agrees but Salim wants to further talk to her about it away from the New Gods. Once alone, he expresses concern over trusting Mr. World, to which Laura takes under advisement.
They are sent to the Grand Peacock Hotel where they are told someone can help them get Wednesday's spear, Gungnir. Laura discovers it's another leprechaun named Liam, a bartender inside the hotel bar. She finds him and explains she needs him why she's there and what she needs. Somehow, he knows who she is, and when asked how he knows her, he informs Laura that he was the one who was hired to kill her first. When Liam refused the job, Wednesday destroyed his lucky coin. He further explains that he can't get into another leprechaun's hoard without a lucky coin. She tells him that she has Sweeney's coin. After a long moment, he considers it, and in the end declines to help, stating it's against an ancient Irish code he belongs to.
Laura leaves him to think about it some more and as he passes by her later that evening, she presents Sweeney's coin hoping that seeing it will change his mind. She tells him what happened to Sweeney and that she needed a particular weapon in his hoard to protect herself. Liam relents but states he gets to keep the coin as payment. She accepts that and plans to go with him, but he tells her he's going alone. Laura informs him the deal was off.
Salim convinces Laura to take a chance on Liam, so she does. While he's gone, Laura says goodbye to Salim. She finds a bridge and says goodbye to Sweeney before scattering his ashes into a river. Thinking Liam has betrayed her, he shows up with a spear in hand and completes the deal after asking why she needs Odin's spear. She reveals she plans to kill him with it. He offers to help her learn how to properly throw it.
After Laura kills Wednesday, she's taken to the Center of America Motel by the New Gods and told they will bargain for her release. She's rightfully skeptical but agrees to wait things out until she decides to escape through the ducting in her room. She finds herself in a spot where she can listen and realizes Mr. World was going to hand her over to the Old Gods and overhears Shadow being told that he would have to avenge his father's death and kill her. Ibis confirms it and Shadow agrees. They head to her room to find her not there.
She's found and brought back to the room where she defends herself by explaining that Mr. World was behind her finding Wednesday's spear and learning of where he'd be. Shadow announces he will take care of her.
Czernobog lends Shadow his hammer and tells him the quickest and slowest ways to kill her. After exchanging a few words (and for the sake of the game) Shadow ends her life.

[ She’s unimpressed, to say the least. If one doesn’t pick up on that by her expression, then the long drawn-out sigh that sounds first will.
Laura squeezes her eyes shut and shakes her head. ]
Okay, so not Hell, not Purgatory, and definitely not anywhere that I’m from. Because I’ve been across the country so many fucking times now and visited every shit town in between that I deserve a medal. But hey, thanks for the phone.
So. Where am I? And how did I get here? ... Anyone? No one? Just my fuckin’ luck….
[ Pauses and continues a smidge friendlier. ]
Anyone here know where I can get a cigarette?
Sample RP: TDM with Sweeney

The right Warden is going to have to be patient and wade through twenty-some-odd years of carefully maintained unhappiness that she has no problem projecting outwardly with zero remorse. It'll take time. A lot of it.
